Mahmoud Jalal

1911-1975
Born in Tripoli, Libya moved to Damascus when his father took refuge there
Studied art in Rome 1935-1939 and specialized in oil painting and sculpture
Worked as an art teacher and later as an inspector in Damascus secondary schools
In 1960he became the deputy dean of the faculty of fine arts, Damascus
Won the first prize in oil painting in 1951
Awarded the Syrian Arab medal of excellence , first degree , in 1971
One of the avant – garde, his style was neo-classical in oil painting and sculpture, but later sculpture works became more symbolic and modern
His works are found in the national museum of Damascus and private collections
